Transport Balancing Act Leaves No Room for Haulier Protest

“The Dublin City-Region was fortunate today that the road haulier protest did not cause more disruption than it did,” says Aebhric Mc Gibney, Policy Director Dublin Chamber of Commerce. “Transport in the region is finely balancing act at the best of times, as commuters seek to weave their way around road construction. Most businesses and commuters managed to avoid today’s disruption by delaying meetings or using other routes into the city, but this cannot go on indefinitely. We believe that the Road Transport Association (RTA) should seek to resolve their dispute without further action and use all the options for communications open to them.”
“The HGV Management strategy has been a success, with a high level of compliance and little additional disruption to the M50. Most trucks seek to use the Port Tunnel even outside of the hours that trucks are banned from the city centre. The much anticipated chaos in HGVs crossing the M1 onto the M50 has not emerged. Most of the congestion on the M50 is due to roadworks and the solution to this delay lies in speeding up the construction works on the M50 and barrier-free tolling. The Dublin Chamber of Commerce believes that the up-grading works should be completed on a 24 hour basis. It is absolute madness to think that the major work on such a project only happens between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.”
